Using Case Law to Identify Police Use of Force Risks
8/16/24 at 10:00 AM to 8/16/24 at 11:00 AM
The determination of what is or is not a reasonable use of force can be elusive, and law enforcement leaders, trainers, and officers must change the traditional paradigm. This requires the analysis to include the concept of legitimacy – regardless of the outcome of a case, is this what we want our officers to be doing? Did the officers unnecessarily place themselves and those involved at risk?
In part three of our use of force case law series, attorney and Chief (Ret.) Mike Ranalli will build upon the foundations built in the prior webinars. While parts one and two were designed to help officers understand the complexities of understanding and interpreting use of force case law, this webinar will focus on some specific decisions and general use of force case law trends that law enforcement officials need to be aware of to incorporate into your policy, practices, and training.
You’ll learn:
- Some police practices that are being held as “clearly established law” across multiple United States Circuit Courts of Appeals.
- How, regardless of the outcome of the case, there may be valuable takeaways from how the facts of some cases unfolded.
- How effective communication and decision-making can prevent some tragedies from happening and eliminate the need for “split-second decisions.”
